This was the final image I completed while on the Don Seegmillar monster workshop (at the beginning of the year - better late than never getting around to putting it up here). I was trying to pull together everything learn't about painting fur/skin/texture. I was also aiming to do a picture for the younger market with interesting friendly (but slightly odd) characters. If I'd had more time I would have liked to work more on the background, as I think it's a bit bare. It's something I may go back to in the future, when I get a minute. I worked on it over two weeks in between other work, so I guess it took around 20 hours from sketch to finish. It was done in Painter. Any critique welcome. I did this image as one of exercises from a CGSociety Painting Monsters Workshop. Concentrating on Horns and teeth! But I also wanted to give the creature a sense of character and playfulness. I used Painter IX.5 and I wanted to have a painterly feel. I only started from a scribble sketch so it wasn't particularly planned, so the composition could probably have been better. I'd previously drawn this as a sketch on a whim, then decided to colour it recently as practice (and also someone suggested 'bird' as a topic elsewhere). I could have spent more time thinking about lighting etc, but it was only supposed to be a quick exercise. I did it in Painter IX.5

I decided to do this sword girl on impluse simply because I like doing swordwoman - tho I wanted her to look girlish and not amazon-like. I think the pose is probably a little akward, but I wanted it a little that way. This is all done in Painter IX as I like the paintly look, consentrating mainly on the figure with a looser background. I wanted to do a character design, and my husband was keen for me to do a pirate (pirates of the carribean influence for sure!).

I did a pirate so I had to do his ship. I wanted it painterly with drama. I didn't go overboard on the rendering of the ship trying to keep the painterly feel. I think I could have worked a little more on the monster, since it looks like a tadpole, but I found it funny, so I left it. This was an impromptu picture. I had an old sketch which I quite liked (a rejected rough from an old project) which I amended and worked from there. I liked the period costume. The creature was a later addition. I thought the picture lacked something. This was inspired by a subject on the Illustration Friday website which was skyline. I wanted to do some sort of old castle perched precariously on a hill or cliff. I also wanted it to be bright and sunny as opposed to dark and brooding - I still wanted drama tho. This is a scene in a Japense folktale where Kotan Utunnai fight the evil Shipish-un-kur.
